I'm going to read some of the articles that you've referenced, and hopefully get a bigger picture. Personally, I've found that using Facebook has only increased my communication with friends, especially those that live far away. I wouldn't be as likely call them, unless they are on skype, so it is a tool that works very well for me. As far as using it in the classroom, I have to agree with you that Ning is probably a much better tool.
